As a parent, when I started reading about attachment/trauma, I kept reading about how a child's brain can be affected by early trauma/separation from birth parent. But I found very little that told much about what to DO about the brain issues. The following centers give patients a series of exercises to do each day that over a period of months can change brain function in relation to attachment/trauma. For many children, the mixture of neurological and psychological support make for a winning combination. Since attachment/trauma issues have neurological roots, this is a logical blend of treatments.

When we first went to our attachment/trauma/adoption therapist, she told us that we needed to have an evaluation at a local neuro center. She automatically refers all of her patients there. She told us that one family had asked her which they should choose if they couldn't afford both. She said, "The neuro center. I can help with attachment, but they can change the brain." On her recommendation, we had an evaluation and started treatment.

We have seen amazing changes in our son. In just a year, most of his symptoms are gone. I could chalk this up to chance, except I now know many other parents of kids with symptoms whose children are experiencing similar success. This isn't an overnight miracle; the program takes hard work and immense dedication. But the results are worth it!

Neurological Development: How Gaps Can Cause Various "Symptoms"
During normal development, a series of steps occur that lead to optimal brain function. As the brain grows, each developmental level builds on previous levels. If growth in one level is incomplete, the brain does not stop growing. But the individual may show signs or symptoms of these “holes” in the foundation; he may also have to work extra hard to compensate.

Awakening the Child Heart by Carla Hannaford

Childhood & the effects of the environment (including in utero) on the brain/body. Science & personal story combined.

I was impressed with the book. Brief notes on some of the topics it covered:

  • the physiological effects of stress on the brain (including in utero)
  • effects of cortisol, stress hormones, on children with parental loss
  • how to "truly be present with our children"
  • the power of the electrical field of the heart and the effects of this
  • nervous information from the heart affects the brain
  • whole chapter on in utero stress (discusses Moro Reflex)

"In chronically anxious mothers, the level of hyperactivity in the fetus can be 10 times that of fetuses in relaxed mothers...Babies with high stress in utero exhibit reduced resistance to disease, sleep & feeding disorders, and in extreme cases, as much as 60% delays in their normal development."

"The rhythm of the mother's heart, if coherent,** sets up an early pattern for the developing brain, assisting the child later to organize the patterns of other vibrations, such as language." ** an unstressed heart

In addition, the book talks about the effects of early trauma on brain wiring and the effects of tv on kids. (Did you know that the flashes from tv--often undetectable to us--cause the brain to go to fight/flight centers...resulting in kids "freezing"...hence the zoning in front of the tv, computer, video games, etc...) I would then wonder if watching tv reinforces the already overdeveloped fight/flight center in kids with PTSD/trauma issues? Lots to consider here...

Help Your Child to Learn by Barbara Pheloung

Sometimes learning problems are a mystery; the child seems intelligent yet there is a block. Barbara Pheloung, a resource teacher, has worked for the past 30 years helping children to achieve their full potential through the developmental approach. Although most of the children referred to on A4everFamily aren’t learning disabled per se, many of them do have issues or blocks that prevent them from reaching their full potential without some kind of assistance. Pheloung profiles nine children, several of them adopted, that have benefited from different types of intervention: food/diet, medical, movement, communication (hearing, listening, understanding), eyes & eye movement, and organizational skills. Checklists help the parent or professional to assess development in each of these major areas. In addition, a checklist is included to assist parents in evaluating toddler or preschool development.

Neurodevelopment Through Movements (DVD) by Suzanne Day

Suzanne Day, a Canadian Neuropsychologist, has produced a DVD demonstrating sequencial movements designed to activate “brain pathways for learning and attention span.” Day’s program, “Neurodevelopment Through Movements,” based on the work of Dr. Temple Fay, neurologist, comes from the idea that neuroplasticity allows people to improve brain function, even wiring areas that may have problems due to interruptions in development…which can be caused by any number of things, including deficits or stressors in the early environment. In her DVD she describes the role of each part of the brain and explains how issues in various areas may relate to certain behaviors. She goes on to outline how normal development happens and suggests intervention that can help children who’ve undergone neurodevelopmental interruption. Day presents a step-by-step program designed for children to do at home each day in an effort to improve neurological function, giving the brain a “second chance” from the brain stem to the cortex. What to Do About Your Brain-Injured Child by Glenn Doman

Although "Brain-Injured Child" sounds ominous, since attachment/trauma have neurological roots, the theories in the book are very helpful in understanding how the brain develops. It explains the basic principles of brain development and describes a treatment protocol that many of us have found helpful in healing our children.
