New Book for Children Print
The new picture book by Christine Mitchell, Welcome Home, Forever Child, fills a need for children who were adopted post-infancy. While acknowledging that the new family may have missed many firsts—crawling, new teeth, first smiles—it also celebrates the firsts that the family will experience together: riding a horse, camping, swimming, school. In cheerful rhyme, the text also speaks of all the things the parents will do for the child: “count to twenty as you hide,” fix broken toys, kiss booboos, mark growth on the wall and more. The book, while appropriate for any adoption, especially meets the needs of trans-racial families as the main characters, cats, are all uniquely colored.

I have been pleased by the positive response to my book Welcome Home, Forever Child. It has truly been a labor of love! When we were finalizing the adoption of my daughter at age four, I was looking for a special adoption book to give her. Although there are many wonderful adoption books available, the majority reflect infant adoptions. Some are also specific to one country. The books that do portray older child adoption are useful in starting a dialogue about the difficulties inherent in older child adoptions. What was missing was an uplifting celebration of a child joining his or her new family.

I was thrilled to receive enthusiastic endorsements from parenting and adoption experts Foster Cline, Regina Kupecky, Jayne Schooler, and Mary Hopkins-Best. Ms. Hopkins-Best said this about Welcome Home, Forever Child: “This book provides reassurance that a lifetime of important memories can be created regardless of the age at which a child joins his or her forever family. The rhymes and delightful illustrations will appeal to children from toddler age to middle childhood.”

I sincerely hope that adoptive families will enjoy this book and find it useful in promoting bonding and attachment.
