Red Flags: Identifying Problem Behaviors
As we have observed our own children and talked to other adoptive parents, an ongoing question has been how one distinguishes attachment symptoms from normal infant/toddler behaviors. It's tough. But we have noticed that certain words and phrases keep popping up. Early on, before we learned about attachment, we used these phrases to try to explain away our children’s behaviors. After we got an education and began therapy, well-meaning friends & family continued to use these phrases, saying that our children looked perfectly normal. Over time, they have become "red flag phrases." If you have concerns about your child, and others try to excuse the behavior with some "red flag phrases", consult an attachment therapist.
